On a cold winter night, the wind howls outside the Damilola Taylor Centre in Peckham, with rain drumming loudly on the glass roof. Inside, a group of teenage boys are engaged in a spirited basketball game with youth workers from the Active Communities Network. Sammy, a 14-year-old participant, shares how the center has positively impacted him, emphasizing the importance of having a safe space. The memory of Damilola Taylor’s tragic death 25 years ago looms over the youngsters, reflecting their concerns about safety in the area.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, the Labour and Co-operative MP for Peckham, highlights the lack of safe spaces for young people during her election campaign. She envisions a future where every child in Peckham is within a short distance of a youth service by 2035. Fahnbulleh acknowledges the efforts of Southwark Council in providing youth services despite financial constraints and aims to combat the loneliness prevalent among the younger generation.

The government’s new youth strategy, launched in Peckham by Secretary of State Lisa Nandy, focuses on investing £500 million in enhancing youth services nationwide. The plan includes building or renovating 250 youth centers and establishing 50 ‘Young Futures Hubs’ for career guidance and mental health support. Nandy emphasizes the importance of empowering young people through initiatives like Votes at 16 and Community Right to Buy.

The Co-op Party emphasizes the significance of creating safe communal spaces for youth as part of their Community Britain campaign. Joe Fortune, the General Secretary, stresses the need for quality youth services to foster strong communities and combat the loneliness crisis affecting young individuals. In Peckham, initiatives like the MyEnds Southwark program play a vital role in providing a sense of belonging and purpose for local youth.

Participants at the Damilola Taylor Centre express gratitude for the opportunity to engage in activities that keep them away from negative influences and peer pressure. They share how the center has positively impacted their mindset and behavior, instilling a sense of purpose and determination. Fahnbulleh reaffirms her commitment to ensuring accessible youth services in the area, aiming to make a lasting difference in young people’s lives.
