“Quebec Man Receives First Regenerated Liver in North America”

A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history as the first patient in North America to receive a regenerated liver, thanks to a groundbreaking technology that could potentially increase the availability of livers for transplant significantly in its initial year of implementation. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, endured liver issues for approximately 15 years, which eventually led to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Just before undergoing a liver transplant, Landry received surprising news from his doctor that the organ had been regenerated using a novel machine at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).

The innovative technology, known as Liver Assist, enables medical professionals to treat and evaluate a donated liver outside the body before transplantation. For Landry, this meant receiving a liver that might have been deemed too risky for use without this technology. Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s surgery. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation during the organ’s extracorporeal phase.

Hénault explained that by assessing the liver’s functionality under conditions simulating the human body, physicians can determine its viability for transplantation with greater confidence. This technology offers a significant boost to the number of available livers for transplant, potentially adding 20 to 24 additional livers for transplantation in the first year alone, according to estimates by the team. These numbers are expected to rise as the technology becomes more widespread, offering hope to many patients awaiting liver transplants.

Moreover, studies have indicated that the use of this technology can reduce complications, reoperations, and hospital stays for suitable patients. Landry’s post-transplant progress has been promising, with his blood work showing better-than-expected results just a day after the operation. He is currently recuperating in Montreal, with plans to return to Gaspésie once he completes his recovery. Landry hopes his journey will inspire discussions about organ donation, emphasizing the critical role of donated organs in saving lives.
