Tory politician Robert Jenrick’s communication strategy regarding his switch to Reform UK reportedly labeled him as the “fresh authority figure in town.” The leaked plan also highlighted him as the “most significant defection narrative” the right-wing party led by Nigel Farage has encountered. The leaked document surfaced following Kemi Badenoch’s dismissal of Jenrick from her Shadow Cabinet upon learning of his defection intentions.
Previously criticized as “Robert Generic,” the prominent Conservative Member of Parliament swiftly joined Reform UK shortly after his departure. Internal documents obtained from Jenrick’s team by Badenoch, as reported by The Sunday Times, indicated his imminent defection plans.
The document depicted Jenrick as a pivotal figure in Reform UK, emphasizing his potential leadership role should Badenoch step down and his dynamic presence within the Conservative Party. It portrayed him as the “new authority figure,” poised to bring experience and political strength to Reform’s operations while supporting Nigel Farage.
A source close to Jenrick claimed that he was not involved in drafting the document. In response, a spokesman for Jenrick stated that he aimed to assist Farage in becoming the Prime Minister, highlighting Reform UK’s commitment to effecting change in Britain.
Meanwhile, Tracy Brabin, the Labour Mayor of West Yorkshire, criticized Reform UK as a destination for disillusioned Tories who feel sidelined within the Conservative Party. The party has also celebrated a defection from the Labour Party recently. When asked about potential defectors, Labour’s Lisa Nandy jokingly dismissed any association with Reform UK, including Health Secretary Wes Streeting.
Nandy declined to rule out the possibility of Farage leading a fascist government if he attains the keys to No. 10. While refraining from confirming specific claims, she emphasized the importance of unity and condemned divisive actions.
