Russia launched a heavy aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its neighboring areas, unleashing numerous missiles and drones during a nighttime attack that lasted for hours and resulted in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, according to officials on Thursday.
Russian forces have escalated their ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv in recent months, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, the only system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in Ukraine’s arsenal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urgently requested additional Patriot interceptors from other countries, but global stockpiles are running low due to the conflict in Iran and Ukraine’s ongoing struggle against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The overnight assault by Russia included cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, adding further pressure on Ukraine’s air defense systems, as reported by the Ukrainian air force.
Explosions rocked the city throughout the night, with Kyiv being the main target, but hits were recorded at 28 different locations across the country, according to the air force. Zelenskyy stated that approximately 40 individuals were injured, and air raid alerts remained in effect until after daybreak.
Describing the attack as “massive,” Zelenskyy remarked on social media that Russia had been meticulously planning the assault, using various types of missiles and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.
In response to the Russian aggression, Poland activated its military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance. Additionally, military aircraft from Poland and other NATO allies were deployed to monitor the country’s airspace.
Romania reported that an unidentified drone crashed near its border with Ukraine, and Moldova confirmed an unauthorized drone breach in its airspace.
The ongoing conflict has highlighted Ukraine’s need for missile defense systems, with U.S. Patriot inventory reportedly declining by at least 65% from prewar levels. Lockheed Martin has been ramping up production of PAC-3 MSE interceptors to address the shortfall, aiming for an annual capacity of 2,000 by 2030.
While there were initial indications that the United States might grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriots, the timeline for such production remains uncertain, with experts suggesting it could take years to establish manufacturing capabilities in Ukraine.
The overnight strikes in Kyiv targeted residential areas, damaging buildings, medical facilities, and educational institutions. Emergency responders worked to rescue trapped individuals and extinguish fires caused by the attacks.
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, both sides have engaged in drone and missile attacks, with neither able to gain a decisive advantage along the extensive front line.
Ukraine has retaliated by launching long-range drone strikes on Russian soil, targeting oil facilities and other infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 726 drones over multiple Russian regions and waters, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
In a significant development, Ukraine’s military successfully struck Russia’s TANECO oil refinery in Tatarstan and the Tamanneftegaz oil terminal in the Krasnodar region, according to the Ukrainian General Staff.
