An influx of tourists is flocking to Harrison Hot Springs seeking refuge from the smoky conditions caused by the ongoing wildfires in British Columbia. Jane Smith, a visitor from Penticton, mentioned that the air quality in her hometown was significantly affected by the smoke, prompting her to travel to Harrison Hot Springs for cleaner air.

Mayor Fred Talen of Harrison Hot Springs acknowledged the rise in visitors in recent weeks, with reports suggesting an increase in tourism from various locations, including Washington state, the Okanagan, and the Lower Mainland. Although specific data on visitor numbers is not available, Tourism Harrison River Valley noted a surge in bookings, particularly from guests looking to escape the smoke and poor air quality.

One establishment experiencing a notable increase in bookings is the Harrison Grand Motel, with a reported 15% rise in occupancy compared to the same period last year. Supervisor Bryon Mason mentioned that visitors range from wildfire evacuees to individuals seeking respite from the smoky conditions.

The appeal of cleaner air and the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities have drawn many visitors to Harrison Hot Springs. Laura Wait, a visitor from Edmonton, altered her vacation plans from Penticton to Harrison Hot Springs due to the poor air quality in the former. Similarly, other areas like the Fraser Valley, Squamish, and Chilliwack are also witnessing an uptick in visitors seeking relief from the wildfire smoke.

Despite the increased tourism, concerns about air quality persist, especially as the eastern Fraser Valley, encompassing areas like Harrison and Chilliwack, experiences a decline in air quality due to drifting wildfire smoke. The B.C. Ministry of Environment’s Air Quality Health Index has classified the region as posing a very high health risk.

As wildfires continue to impact air quality across the province, individuals are actively seeking destinations like Harrison Hot Springs and other regions offering cleaner air and a temporary escape from the haze and poor conditions.
