Donald Trump has announced that the United States will gain ‘complete access’ to Greenland through a new agreement reached with NATO members at the Davos summit. The President also committed to establishing a section of America’s “Golden Dome” missile defense system in Greenland.

In an interview with Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo at the World Economic Forum, Trump emphasized the significance of the new deal, stating that it grants the US full access to Greenland for security purposes, including military access without any financial obligations. He further expressed that this access is crucial for national and international security interests.

Trump clarified that discussions with NATO are in the early stages, and specific terms of the agreement are yet to be finalized. The announcement follows Trump’s recent discussions about a potential deal concerning Greenland. He indicated that any threats of tariffs on UK and EU allies, opposing the annexation of Greenland, would be retracted.

The proposed deal encompasses cooperation on Greenland’s mineral resources and the deployment of the US Golden Dome missile defense system, with Trump noting that the agreement would be enduring. When questioned about US ownership of Greenland, Trump described the arrangement as intricate.

Further negotiations on the Greenland issue are ongoing, led by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Trump’s remarks at the World Economic Forum raised eyebrows, as he mistakenly referred to Greenland and Iceland and made controversial statements regarding European nations.

Trump reiterated the strategic importance of Greenland for national and international security during his address to global leaders and business figures. He stressed that as part of North America, Greenland falls within US territory, emphasizing the US role in safeguarding the region for the benefit of Europe.

While expressing a desire for prompt negotiations to discuss territorial acquisition, Trump ruled out the use of military force, stating that it is not a preferred option. He underscored the intention to secure Greenland through diplomatic means rather than coercion, highlighting the commitment to peaceful resolutions.
