A television host is advocating for a complete prohibition on fireworks following a tragic New Year’s incident that resulted in severe injuries. Andrea Plewig, 55, the presenter of the show “Astro Royal,” was hospitalized after a firework mishap at her home led to the loss of her left eye.

Plewig recounted how she meticulously handled the fireworks, ensuring safety measures were in place. Despite her precautions, a firework malfunctioned, striking her eye and causing intense pain.

The accident occurred shortly after Plewig had completed a challenging round of chemotherapy for breast cancer. Despite efforts by medical professionals, her injured eye could not be saved. Now, she is actively campaigning for stricter controls on personal use of fireworks and is endorsing the “No To Fireworks” movement.

In the United Kingdom, various organizations such as The Firework Campaign UK, the RSPCA, and Help for Heroes are supporting this cause. They are urging for more stringent regulations to reduce the negative impact of fireworks on animals, veterans, and vulnerable individuals, proposing measures like banning public sales, reducing noise levels, and restricting pyrotechnic displays to licensed public events.

Similar initiatives worldwide have garnered significant support, with numerous petitions in the UK alone amassing thousands of signatures, some reaching up to 190,000 backers.

Expressing her desire for an absolute ban on fireworks, Plewig emphasized their hazardous nature and the unforeseen repercussions they bring to humans, nature, and animals alike.

Her close friend and fellow TV host, Vera Int-Veen, 58, expressed shock over Plewig’s accident and extended unwavering support, emphasizing the solidarity of their friend circle throughout Plewig’s cancer journey and the current challenging period.

While Plewig has received a clean bill of health post-breast cancer treatment, she still requires surgery. Her advocacy for stricter fireworks regulations sheds light on the persistent concerns surrounding the dangers associated with private fireworks usage, particularly in residential settings.
