The era of traditional copper landlines hanging above UK streets is coming to an end, with the nationwide shift to “Digital Voice” services scheduled for January 2027. This transition will see homes transitioning to using broadband for their phone calls.
This change signifies a significant shift in UK communications, with BT’s Openreach network actively implementing the “Stop Sell” initiative to hasten the move away from outdated infrastructure. Under these guidelines, providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk are no longer permitted to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas.
The implementation of Stop Sell notifications has been ongoing in various parts of the UK, and Openreach has now confirmed an expansion affecting 238 exchange locations and around 1.69 million premises. Following these adjustments, customers seeking to upgrade, switch, or acquire new services will be required to transition to full fiber broadband and digital phone services, abandoning the legacy copper network.
James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell program in advancing the UK’s transition to a modern full-fiber future. This move aims to shift individuals to more advanced, future-proof technologies as the capabilities of copper for modern communications diminish.
By early June, the Stop Sell rules will be enforced across 1,432 exchanges nationwide, impacting roughly 14.2 million properties. The end goal is to facilitate a seamless migration to faster, more dependable digital infrastructure, ultimately streamlining the maintenance and operational costs of both old and new networks in preparation for the nationwide shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) less than eight months away.
Digital Voice, BT’s next-generation home phone service, leverages broadband technology to offer modern features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobile phones. Upgrading to Digital Voice should not disrupt most households’ phone usage, as the cost is bundled with broadband services in a single package without any additional charges. It ensures improved call quality, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.
