University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a Nobel Prize winner, has secured an Ig Nobel Prize, a lighthearted counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes, which recognizes unconventional and imaginative academic research. Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on developing a splash-free urinal.

The team, led by fluid physicist Zhao Pan, experimented with various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, in their pursuit of a superior, splash-free model. Thurairajah highlighted the Nautilus as the preferred design due to its reduced splash and ease of cleaning compared to the Cornucopia.

Their unique research efforts culminated in the presentation of the Ig Nobel Prize in Zurich, where the team sported bright yellow raincoats. Despite the nature of their study, Thurairajah clarified that they did not conduct any tests involving actual urine, emphasizing the scientific rigor of their approach.

While embracing the humor surrounding their work, Thurairajah emphasized the practical implications of their research in making public spaces, particularly bathrooms, more appealing and hygienic. The team’s findings were published in the journal PNAS Nexus last year.

In addition to Thurairajah’s team, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were recognized at the awards ceremony for their studies on unethical behavior related to candy consumption and the innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing, respectively. The Ig Nobel Awards, managed by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. to facilitate international participation and collaboration within the scientific community.
