Wes Streeting has urged action to regulate social media use by individuals under 16 years old in response to increasing calls for restrictions.

The Health Secretary voiced concerns about the negative effects that platforms like Instagram have on children’s well-being, highlighting that the rapid evolution of technology has not been accompanied by a thorough understanding of its consequences. This statement follows recent advocacy from a major teaching union for a ban on social media for individuals under 16 to enhance focus in schools and safeguard mental health.

When questioned about his stance on a potential ban during an interview on Sky News, Mr. Streeting emphasized the need for action in the realm of underage social media usage. He acknowledged the importance of considering diverse perspectives on the matter, including the benefits and drawbacks of online connectivity through social platforms.

Over the weekend, the Teachers’ union NASUWT called on the government to compel major tech companies to implement measures preventing minors from accessing their services. This push aligns with Australia’s decision to prohibit social media use for individuals under 16 last December. NASUWT cited mounting evidence indicating that unregulated exposure to social media is linked to disruptive behaviors in schools, negative impacts on young people’s mental health, and exposure to harmful content.

Liz Kendall, the Technology Secretary, is reportedly contemplating imposing restrictions on social media access for minors, with a decision expected in the near future rather than in an extended timeframe. Mr. Streeting commended Mr. Starmer for engaging with MPs on this issue, emphasizing the complexity of the challenge at hand and the necessity to address it effectively. As the Health Secretary, he expressed deep concerns about the adverse effects of social media on the health, educational outcomes, and overall well-being of young individuals.

He raised issues such as the potential impact of excessive screen time on cognitive development, the rise of cyberbullying extending into private spaces through social media apps, and the prevalence of concerns related to body image, online grooming, and unrealistic expectations perpetuated by social platforms.
