A 93-year-old widow, Gwen Whittle, shared a touching story about strangers who made a kind gesture towards her as she continued a cherished tradition. Gwen had been married to her beloved husband James for 71 years until his passing in September. The couple met in 1952 when Gwen moved to Liverpool for her teaching career. They had a tradition of visiting Toby Carvery on Aigburth Road in Liverpool every Boxing Day. Determined to honor this tradition even after James’ passing, Gwen reserved a table at the restaurant and brought a photo of them together.

Reflecting on their life together, Gwen fondly remembered the happiness and laughter they shared throughout their decades-long marriage. Despite James’ passing, Gwen expressed gratitude for the wonderful life they had together. They had moved to Hale Village in 1978 and had recently started the tradition of visiting Toby Carvery on Boxing Day.

This year, Gwen decided to continue the tradition alone, placing a photo of her and James on the table for company. Despite some people’s concerns about her dining alone, Gwen was content to enjoy the day in her own way. While dining at the restaurant on Boxing Day, Gwen found herself seated near two generous families who showed acts of kindness towards her.

One family invited Gwen to join them, which she politely declined, assuming the teenagers at the table might not appreciate her presence. Later, when Gwen asked for her bill, she was surprised to find out that a woman from another table had already paid for her meal. Touched by the gesture, Gwen tried to refuse but the woman insisted, explaining that she wanted to bring some cheer to someone on Christmas.

Grateful for the unexpected kindness, Gwen found solace in the gesture during her first Christmas without James. She was moved by the generosity of the strangers and attempted to offer some money in return, which the woman declined. Gwen shared her heartwarming experience in a letter to the ECHO, hoping to spread positivity and bring a smile to others during challenging times.
