A woman who had forgiven the murderer of her mother and cousin was tragically killed by the same man. Sally Snowden McKay, aged 75, and her cousin, Joseph “Lee” Baker, a 52-year-old Memphis blues guitarist, were murdered on their estate at Horseshoe Lake in Arkansas in 1996. Sally’s daughter, Martha, extended compassion towards the convicted murderer, Travis Lewis, who was 17 at the time, while he was in prison. Martha showed kindness by supporting Lewis’ early release in 2018 and even offering him a job at Snowden House, a luxury bed and breakfast and wedding venue she established at the site of the tragedy.
Despite maintaining his innocence and blaming another individual for the murders, Martha chose to believe in Lewis. However, her trust in him led to a devastating outcome. Lewis worked at Snowden House for 18 months until suspicions arose about him being involved in the theft of $10,000 from the property. Martha was later found brutally murdered at the house on March 25, 2020, at the age of 63. The police discovered a bag near her with valuables and a bloody knife, indicating a planned theft or a possible murder.
The perpetrator attempted to flee but drowned in the lake while trying to escape from law enforcement. The body retrieved from the water was confirmed to be Lewis, the same man who had taken the lives of another family member 23 years later. A toxicology report revealed the presence of various drugs in his system. Family members expressed shock and disbelief at the tragic turn of events, emphasizing Martha’s zest for life and the profound loss they experienced.
