England has pledged to support captain Maro Itoje in the wake of his mother’s tragic passing. Itoje recently shared the sad news of his mother Florence’s demise in December and has traveled to Nigeria for her funeral.
The 31-year-old forward missed Saracens’ Premiership match against Newcastle over the weekend to be with his family in Nigeria. He was also absent from the Six Nations launch in Edinburgh, with his friend Jamie George stepping in for media responsibilities.
George empathetically discussed the similarities with his own past, having also lost his mother during the Six Nations in 2024. Expressing heartfelt sentiments, he mentioned, “We’ve had many conversations. The similarities are striking, truly. It’s devastating news. I understand the challenging period he’s facing.”
“My main advice to him was to ensure he allows himself ample time to mourn and process things. He has had the opportunity to do so and will return only when he feels fully prepared to contribute wholeheartedly to the team,” George added.
While England prepares for their opening game against Wales on February 7, they are heading to Girona for a warm weather training camp. Itoje will join his teammates in Spain after bidding farewell to his mother, and head coach Steve Borthwick is confident he will be ready for the tournament.
Borthwick remarked, “From our conversations, I feel he has found it incredibly tough emotionally. This week in Nigeria is a crucial step for him and those close to him. He has evolved into a strong leader. We eagerly anticipate his return to the squad.”
In an Instagram post sharing the heartbreaking news, Itoje wrote, “2025 was a year of significant personal and professional milestones and achievements. However, it was also the most challenging year of my life as my mother sadly passed away in December, 2025. This was undoubtedly the most profound and painful loss I have ever endured.”
“She was my confidante, partner in conversations, friend, guide, teacher, and solace. Every aspect of my life has been positively impacted by her,” he added.
Expressing gratitude for his mother’s life and influence, Itoje concluded, “She was the pillar and heartbeat of our family, leaving an irreplaceable void. I find solace in my faith, believing she watches over us from Heaven. May she rest in perfect peace. Love you Mama.”
