Users of various devices, including Samsung models, are encountering screen flickering issues while using the Gmail app, leading to difficulties in reading emails and sending messages. Some individuals have reported instances where text disappears entirely or is replaced by blank white boxes within the app.
Expressing their frustrations, users have turned to social media platforms to voice their complaints about these technical glitches. One user named Jeremiah shared his displeasure on X, calling out Gmail and Android for the ongoing flickering problem on his Samsung Fold device, deeming it “completely unacceptable.”
Similar grievances have surfaced on Google’s support forums, with users expressing their struggles with reading emails due to the persistent screen flickering, despite attempting various troubleshooting steps like force-stopping the app, clearing the cache, and device restarts.
Google product expert Kimiya Kitani has identified the root cause of the issue to be related to Android System WebView, an essential component that enables apps to display web content internally. Kitani highlighted that certain devices, particularly Samsung tablets, are facing intermittent challenges with Android System WebView, which has been escalated to Google for resolution.
Although the exact number of affected users remains unclear, reports indicate that Samsung foldable devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold series and specific Galaxy tablets are among the most impacted by this issue.
While a permanent fix is awaited from Google, Kitani suggests a temporary workaround that involves rotating the device to prevent screen flickering. By opening an email in portrait mode, switching to landscape mode until the screen stabilizes, and reverting back to portrait mode, users may alleviate the flickering problem temporarily.
In the interim, rotating the device as recommended by Kitani seems to be the most straightforward solution until a permanent resolution is provided by Google.
