A family is grieving the loss of their teenage daughter who tragically passed away due to a blood clot linked to her use of the contraceptive pill. Áine Rose Hurst, 19, initially dismissed a severe headache as a hangover, but sadly succumbed to the condition two days later.
An inquest revealed that Áine had been advised to discontinue the pill due to high blood pressure, but her GP later prescribed it again. In response to the devastating loss, Áine’s parents, Graham and Kerry, are speaking out to caution young women about the potential risks of the contraceptive pill and advocate for revisions to NHS guidelines. They have established ARCS – The Áine Rose Contraceptive Safety Foundation – to promote awareness in honor of their daughter.
Kerry described Áine as a loving and vibrant individual who cherished her family. With aspirations of a large family and a zest for life, Áine’s passing has left a profound impact on her loved ones. Despite a seemingly normal youth, Áine’s health took a drastic turn after resuming the contraceptive pill following a period of high blood pressure. Subsequently, she experienced a fatal blood clot leading to her untimely death.
The Hurst family is now dedicated to raising awareness about the potential dangers associated with contraceptive pills, especially for individuals with a history of high blood pressure. Although nothing can alleviate their grief, they hope that their advocacy efforts through ARCS will prevent similar tragedies and honor Áine’s memory.
