A well-known political expert has indicated that the decline of Donald Trump might be underway amid growing concerns about repression in the United States. The recent deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot by ICE agents, have fueled worries about the condition of democracy in the country.

The anxiety has been amplified by the arrest of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort, raising alarms about press freedom in America. Nonetheless, political commentator Andrew Neil has suggested that with mounting speculation regarding Trump’s physical and mental well-being, his administration could be on the verge of fading away.

In an article for the Daily Mail, Andrew proposed that a rising number of dissatisfied Republicans, coupled with Trump’s diminishing popularity, might create opportunities for more moderate politicians to fill the void left by MAGA politics. He expressed, “The decline of the Trump presidency is probably already under way. If it ends with a whimper and disappointment rather than a celebratory bang, that will empower more moderate Republicans to reassert themselves, encouraging Democrats to stay in the mainstream rather than veer left.”

Andrew, a former journalist for BBC and GB News, also noted that even if Trump exits office, his style of political maneuvering will have a lasting impact on America. He remarked, “A return to the American politics we knew before Trump is not on the cards. But America need not be condemned indefinitely to the current craziness.”

Andrew’s comments followed the arrests of two journalists, ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon and Georgia Fort, earlier this week, prompting concern among press freedom organizations that have responded to the incidents. Don was detained on allegations of violating federal law while covering a protest at a church in Minnesota. The justice department accused Don and three others of disrupting religious freedom at the place of worship, allegations that Don denies.

Georgia Fort, another arrested journalist, shared a video on social media showing federal agents outside her home. Upon release, Don affirmed his commitment to continue reporting. He declared, “I have spent my entire career covering the news. I will not stop now. The first amendment to the US Constitution protects that work for me and countless other journalists who do what I do. I stand with all of them, and I will not be silenced. I look forward to my day in court.”

Meanwhile, press freedom groups in the USA, as reported by the Guardian, have condemned the arrests. Scott Griffen, Executive Director of the International Press Institute, criticized the Trump administration’s actions as an assault on the first amendment and the public’s right to information. He emphasized that the outcome of this case will significantly impact the future of free media and information in America.
