The WNBA’s Toronto Tempo unveiled their long-awaited mascots during a recent game, but the reception from fans has been mixed. Dez, the snapping turtle, and Dot, the Arctic hare, embody different tempos, inspired by Aesop’s fable about their race. Despite their contrasting personalities, both mascots represent Canada’s sole WNBA team.
Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is known for being composed, enjoying music, soft-shell tacos, and being a Taurus. On the other hand, Dot, nicknamed after Toronto as T-Dot, is full of energy, loves cotton candy, the Netflix F1 series “Drive to Survive,” and is a Gemini. Their paths crossed when Dot followed the northern lights south to Dez’s territory, realizing they complemented each other perfectly.
According to the Tempo’s news release, the duo bonded over their shared love of rhythm, with Dez bringing patience and timing, and Dot contributing speed and fearless energy. Eventually, the heartbeat of Toronto drew them both to the city. However, some critics have not embraced the new mascots immediately, with comments on social media expressing disappointment in their design compared to other sports mascots.
Whitney Bell, the Tempo’s chief marketing officer, emphasized the mascots’ Canadian identity, aiming to reflect the team’s roots. While some online voices feel the mascots do not embody enough Canadian or Torontonian elements, others appreciate the symbolic representation.
The franchise has yet to respond to criticism of the mascots, but reactions from fans vary, with some loving the concept and imagery. Speculation about the mascots’ relationship and sexuality has also sparked discussions among fans, although it has been clarified that Dez and Dot are simply best friends. As the Tempo continues their challenging season, currently standing at 10–25 with a 12-game losing streak, the support from their mascots remains a hopeful beacon amidst their struggles.
