A video circulating online shows an individual riding an e-scooter swiftly along the Conestoga Expressway among regular traffic, prompting a cautionary reminder from law enforcement about the potential severe repercussions of disregarding regulations.

The exact time of the video remains unspecified, captured seemingly from a vehicle’s dashboard camera on the expressway.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service released the footage, emphasizing that e-scooters should adhere to Ontario’s guidelines, including a speed limit of 24 km/h and prohibition from controlled-access highways.

The video depicts the e-scooter rider traversing two lanes of traffic and being overtaken by other vehicles on the four-lane expressway.

Highlighting that the expressway is monitored by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Waterloo regional police disapproved of the e-scooter’s presence in such a setting.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, they are cognizant of the video’s content.

E-scooter safety concerns are not exclusive to law enforcement, as a recent report by the Canadian Pediatric Society revealed a surge in e-scooter-related injuries among children and teens at SickKids hospital in Toronto.

Dr. Daniel Rosenfield, a pediatric emergency physician at SickKids, expressed concerns about the escalating number of e-scooter injuries, emphasizing the lack of helmet usage in most cases.

Ontario’s ongoing pilot program allows municipalities to regulate e-scooter usage, with specific requirements such as wearing helmets, being at least 16 years old, standing while riding, abstaining from carrying passengers or cargo, and avoiding controlled access highways.

The provincial website underscores that e-scooter riders must adhere to all Highway Traffic Act regulations, with penalties ranging from fines of $250 to $2,500 for non-compliance with pilot program rules.
