A new Canadian energy “powerhouse” is in the making following the merger announcement by Halifax-based Emera Inc. and Calgary-based Canadian Utilities. The merger, valued at $72 billion, is set to create one of the largest utilities in North America. The move comes as Atco Ltd., the controlling shareholder of Canadian Utilities, shifts its focus towards defense, housing, and infrastructure development.

Nancy Southern, Atco’s CEO, revealed that the merger discussions began over a year ago when Emera’s Scott Balfour approached her with the idea of forming a strong Canadian energy company. The combined entity, operating under the Emera brand, is expected to cater to six million customers across Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Australia.

Post-merger, Emera plans to invest $32 billion in capital projects until 2030, with a significant presence in Florida and Alberta. Southern will lead the refocused Atco and co-chair Emera’s board, emphasizing the need for a strategic shift to meet evolving market demands.

The transaction, involving Emera’s acquisition of Canadian Utilities, is valued at $14.3 billion. Shareholders of the involved companies will vote early next year, pending regulatory approvals. The merger is seen as a strategic move to create a robust Canadian utility company capable of driving growth and meeting the growing demand for new infrastructure.
