The Emmy Awards will shift to Prime Video starting in 2027 under a new six-year deal between Amazon and the Television Academy. This move marks the end of a 72-year tradition where broadcast networks aired the ceremony.

The announcement signifies a transition to streaming platforms, which have been dominating the prestigious categories at the Emmys. Since 1955, the awards show has been broadcast on one of the four major networks. The recent “Wheel Deal” rotation among ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC will now be replaced by a single long-term partnership starting with the awards in September next year.

The shift to Prime Video does not require a subscription for viewers to watch the Emmys as it will remain accessible for free, aligning with the Academy’s initial demand to keep it open to all. This agreement mirrors the Oscars’ recent move to YouTube, highlighting the evolving landscape of award show broadcasting.

In light of declining viewership across award shows due to a fragmented media landscape, the Academy and Amazon are optimistic about Prime Video’s potential to boost viewership and attract a younger audience. By leveraging Prime Video’s platform, including its partnership with Apple TV for acclaimed shows like “Widow’s Bay” and “The Studio,” there is a strategic opportunity to promote Emmy nominees and enhance engagement.

While acknowledging the significance of the streaming transition, both Cris Abrego and Mike Hopkins emphasized that the quality of content remains paramount. They believe that recognizing excellence transcends the medium through which it is delivered, underscoring the Academy’s commitment to celebrating outstanding television achievements.

As the Emmys make their debut on Prime Video, the partnership offers a hybrid experience of live and on-demand content, aligning with Amazon’s emphasis on providing diverse viewing options. Looking ahead, there is flexibility to potentially adjust the timing of the awards ceremony in future years, reflecting a willingness to adapt to evolving audience preferences and technological advancements.
