The Ontario government’s recent decision to end exclusive rights could pave the way for more casinos to be established in the Niagara Region. Premier Doug Ford unveiled the Destination Niagara initiative in December, aiming to boost tourism by introducing new casinos, a theme park, an expanded airport, and other attractions to attract double the number of visitors.
The interim minister of tourism, culture, and gaming in Ontario disclosed that the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. has finalized an agreement with MGE Niagara Entertainment Inc. to allow additional casino operators. MGE will relinquish its exclusivity rights while retaining control of Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara.
Later this year, OLG is expected to commence a procurement process to identify potential new casino operators for the region. However, there has been local opposition to one aspect of Ford’s plan under Destination Niagara, particularly the proposal to install a second ferris wheel near the falls.
Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati expressed skepticism about the ferris wheel proposal, stating that it is an unpopular idea among residents and visitors. The community sentiment is also echoed by NDP Member of Provincial Parliament for Niagara Falls, Wayne Gates.
