In Nepal, a dramatic rescue unfolded as Chandika Kumari Shrestha was found alive in the ruins of her collapsed home in Betrawati village. Initially thought to have perished in the floods, Shrestha survived for days in a small air pocket amidst the mud and water that engulfed her home.
Authorities, including police officer Mahendra Darnal, located Shrestha after hearing her faint cry for help near her submerged four-story house. Following a 45-minute rescue operation, she was safely evacuated to an army hospital, stunning her family who had already begun mourning her presumed loss.
Betrawati, one of the areas hardest hit by the devastating floods in Nepal, saw numerous casualties with many still missing. The town’s market and residential buildings, some towering four stories high, were buried under thick debris from the destructive deluge that claimed over 1,300 lives across the country, leaving thousands unaccounted for.
Rescue efforts in Betrawati involved teams of workers meticulously searching for survivors amidst the rubble. Tragically, in a separate discovery days earlier, 24 bodies were recovered from a decomposed state in the market area.
As the search for survivors continues, nearly 5,000 people remain missing since the catastrophic glacial collapse triggered the deadly floods. Despite the grim situation, rescue teams persist in seeking out individuals trapped in tunnels and beneath hardened mud layers covering structures.
In a glimmer of hope amid the tragedy, miraculous tales of survival like Shrestha’s and that of an eight-year-old boy reunited with his mother emerge, showcasing resilience in the face of the disaster.
