In a crowded session at the British Parliament on Tuesday, Members of Parliament convened to witness the government redefine its ties with Israel. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his cabinet ministers, including the recently appointed Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, were present. Miliband, who is of Jewish descent, announced a prohibition on trade with settlers in the occupied West Bank. He disclosed that Canada and France would also implement similar measures.
Miliband declared, “Today, France and Canada are joining Britain in banning the import of products from illegal settlements.” The announcement was met with enthusiastic cheers in the parliamentary chamber. Miliband highlighted that several other countries, such as the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, and Norway, have either enforced bans on goods or are in the process of doing so. Additionally, countries like Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden have pledged to support further actions.
The United Kingdom also intends to take action against specific companies and individuals involved in activities supporting settlement expansion, such as construction, infrastructure, financing, or real estate. Miliband emphasized that those entities would face comprehensive UK sanctions.
The decision to impose sanctions was prompted by Israel crossing a significant threshold, specifically by initiating tenders for the construction of 1,200 settler homes in the E1 area of the occupied West Bank. The move was deemed a violation of long-standing principles and triggered the UK’s response.
Furthermore, the joint statement issued by Prime Minister Mark Carney, along with the British and French leaders, emphasized their commitment to Israel’s security while advocating for a two-state solution. They underscored the importance of preserving peace, stability, and security in the region and beyond.
In response to these actions, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar criticized his British counterpart, labeling the accusations as “outrageous lies.” Israel retaliated by immediately closing the UK’s consulate in East Jerusalem, expelling UK representatives from a joint military monitoring center in Gaza, and terminating UK training for Palestinian security forces in the West Bank. Additionally, Israel announced it would bar entry to 12 elected UK officials and other British citizens allegedly involved in anti-Semitic and anti-Israel activities.
Jewish leaders in Canada and Britain condemned the sanctions imposed by the UK, Canada, France, and other European nations. Various Jewish organizations expressed concerns over potential security threats as tensions escalate in the region. The developments have sparked a wave of reactions globally, with different nations and leaders expressing varied perspectives on the situation.
