An individual from Annapolis Valley has been charged with attempted murder and multiple weapon-related offenses following a shooting incident involving a woman known to the suspect. The victim sustained severe injuries and was swiftly transported to the hospital for treatment.
Ryan Alexander Cole, aged 36, appeared briefly in Nova Scotia Provincial Court on Monday, with his case adjourned until August 25. He is currently in custody.
The incident unfolded on a Saturday morning in South Farmington within the Annapolis Valley region, prompting a police response to a reported shooting. The suspect fled the scene in a damaged Mazda sedan, heading towards Halifax.
Law enforcement pursued the vehicle and attempted to halt it using a spike belt on the highway. Despite evading the deflation device, the suspect was subsequently located from the air after the Mazda crashed into a tree along a hiking trail behind a shopping mall in Bedford, a suburb of Halifax.
Subsequently, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, prompting the RCMP to issue alerts to the public regarding the unfolding situation. RCMP Corporal Mandy Edwards emphasized the public safety concerns associated with the suspect’s potential possession of a firearm.
A coordinated effort involving police dog units from the RCMP and Halifax Regional Police, as well as emergency response teams from both agencies, led to the apprehension of the suspect. While confirming a relationship between Cole and the victim, the nature of their connection remains undisclosed.
Cole has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2008, including various charges such as breaching release conditions, disarming a police officer, resisting arrest, and unauthorized distribution of intimate images.
The incident involving Cole is part of ongoing developments in Nova Scotia, with other notable news stories including a class-action settlement related to an Air Canada crash landing and an arrest linked to threats made against the U.S. consulate in Halifax.
