The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s new Hall of Excellence during a special event at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently concluded his broadcasting career after announcing over 4,000 games, has been an integral part of the Blue Jays organization for almost four decades, serving as a player, manager, and broadcaster.
Expressing his gratitude, Martinez shared with CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning” that being recognized in this way is a tremendous honor for him. He extended his heartfelt appreciation to the loyal Blue Jays fans who have embraced him over the years, making him feel like a part of their extended family.
Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and memorable catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez reflected on how these lines evolved during his time as the play-by-play announcer in Toronto, drawing inspiration from his experiences in Milwaukee and his playing days.
Despite the challenges of transitioning into retirement after being involved in professional baseball since 1967, Martinez shared that he is adjusting to this new phase positively. He had hoped to be part of the Blue Jays’ 50th season celebrations but had to step back due to health reasons after battling cancer for the second time in 2025, following an initial diagnosis in 2022. He happily confirmed that he is now cancer-free and in good health.
The Hall of Excellence, situated on the 100 Level concourse behind the right field, will feature an exhibit celebrating the contributions of players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters who have shaped the franchise. Notably, all current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence will be included in this distinguished group.
Reflecting on his journey from feeling like an “exile” when he first joined the Blue Jays in 1981 to becoming an icon in Toronto, Martinez praised the city’s passion for baseball and the unwavering support of the fans. He also highlighted the excitement of witnessing last year’s World Series, particularly lauding the thrilling Game 7 and the exceptional team dynamics.
Looking ahead, Martinez acknowledged the challenges faced by players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. during tough seasons, emphasizing the demanding nature of the game even for the most talented athletes.
