Romanian authorities have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with offenses including trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and tampering with witnesses. His brother Tristan has also been indicted for complicity in the crimes. The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship and were previously professional kickboxers, were apprehended in Miami in late July following a request for their extradition from the UK.
Residing mainly in Romania since 2017, the siblings have been under investigation since December 2022 for various criminal activities, including human trafficking. Despite the allegations, they have consistently denied any wrongdoing. According to Romanian prosecutors, the Tate brothers enticed victims by falsely promising relationships or marriage, only to coerce them into creating pornographic content for a webcam enterprise.
In response to the indictment, a legal representative for the Tates, Eugen Vidineac, stated that they would thoroughly review all aspects of the charges and challenge any deficiencies in the evidence or legal procedures through appropriate legal channels. The accused individuals maintain their innocence in the face of these accusations.
While awaiting a decision on their extradition to the UK on rape charges, the Tate brothers remain detained in the U.S. The Romanian anti-organized crime unit, DIICOT, which is leading the investigation, has not yet confirmed whether they will seek extradition from the United States. The legal process in Romania dictates that the case will be reviewed by a preliminary court chamber before the trial can commence, a procedure that may prolong the proceedings beyond the standard 60-day period.
The prosecution alleges that Andrew Tate began exploiting a victim at the age of 15 in the UK before transferring her to Bucharest, Romania, where she was subjected to physical and mental coercion to produce explicit content for social media platforms. Tristan is accused of being an accessory to the crimes, employing physical force to manipulate the victim. The brothers are said to have retained a substantial portion of the victim’s videochat earnings, attempting to launder the money through the purchase of luxury vehicles.
Although the brothers were previously charged with human trafficking in Romania, a court of appeals in Bucharest returned the case to prosecutors in late 2024 due to the exclusion of certain evidence. Andrew Tate has previously acknowledged relocating to Romania due to perceived leniency in law enforcement in the country. By projecting a lifestyle characterized by ostentation and hyper-masculinity, the siblings have cultivated a predominantly male following enamored with their extravagant car collection and relationships with attractive women.
