In Kyiv, a Russian drone targeted the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service on Friday, hitting one of the most significant locations attacked during the ongoing conflict as Russia escalated its air strike campaign against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the drone specifically aimed at the security service head’s office within the building after consulting with SBU acting head Oleksandr Poklad.

The assault marked a notable escalation in the conflict, prompting Zelenskyy to promise a retaliatory response as Russia’s airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital continued for the tenth consecutive day. The attack resulted in heavy black smoke billowing in Kyiv’s historic city center, causing injuries to at least 12 individuals, according to the city’s mayor.

Throughout the more than four-and-a-half-year conflict with Russia, Ukrainian government buildings have seldom been targeted by drone and missile strikes. Zelenskyy announced plans for a proportional and robust response to mirror the severity of the strike, indicating that active measures were being prepared in response to the Russian attacks. Poklad briefed Zelenskyy on the readiness for an active response, with Zelenskyy revealing the determined geographic scope of their planned actions.

The SBU plays a crucial role in Ukraine’s war efforts by executing impactful strikes within Russia to disrupt Moscow’s military capabilities and energy infrastructure. The security agency has undertaken bold operations against Russia, including the 2022 bombing of a Russian bridge to Crimea and the 2025 Spiderweb drone attack on Russian strategic bombers. Furthermore, the SBU is implicated in covert operations targeting senior Russian military and other figures accused by Ukraine of committing war crimes, actions dismissed by Russia as terrorist acts.

In the midst of these events, U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were slated to visit Moscow and Kyiv in the following days as diplomatic attempts to resolve the conflict remained deadlocked. The protracted fighting across over 1,200 kilometers of the front line and the incessant bombardment of Ukrainian cities have impeded peace efforts. Kyiv has reciprocated by intensifying its strikes within Russia to undermine the country’s economic capacity to sustain the war.

Recently, Russia has shifted its tactics in the conflict, with daytime strikes becoming more frequent, facilitated by fast-flying, jet-powered drones. The round-the-clock attacks have compounded the fear instilled by nighttime strikes, leaving residents fatigued from constant disruptions during the day. The sound of air-raid sirens in Kyiv has become commonplace, with residents enduring the strain of continuous alerts, impacting daily routines and causing widespread exhaustion.

Residents like Volodymyr Bovsunovskyi are grappling with the challenges posed by the ongoing attacks, contemplating temporary relocation to ensure the well-being of their families amidst the chaos. Ivan Datsiv, an IT worker, humorously remarked on the destruction of his apartment caused by a Russian drone, highlighting the unnerving frequency of alerts that have rendered seeking shelter almost futile. As the situation remains precarious, many residents are considering leaving Kyiv in search of safety and tranquility elsewhere.

The series of strikes on book warehouses across Ukraine underscores Russia’s aggressive tactics, which have resulted in the destruction of approximately 15 million books, representing a significant cultural loss for Ukraine.
