A former prominent member of the Conservative Party, who once compared Nigel Farage to a key figure in Hitler’s regime, has been revealed as the newest defector to Reform from the Conservative Party.
Nadhim Zahawi, a wealthy individual dismissed from a government position due to a tax investigation, had expressed concerns about living in a country led by Farage in the past. The Conservatives alleged that Zahawi had sought a peerage from them multiple times but was denied before joining Reform.
Zahawi’s move marks a trend of Conservative officials switching to Reform, which is currently leading in the polls. Critics have labeled Farage’s party as a landing spot for former disgraced Conservative ministers.
In response, the Tories criticized Reform as a destination for outdated politicians seeking personal gain. Zahawi, who faced tax-related controversies and paid a significant penalty, was known for his long tenure as an MP and his involvement in various business ventures.
The TUC General Secretary, Paul Nowak, remarked that Zahawi’s defection to Reform was not surprising, citing Zahawi’s previous statements critical of Farage and his alignment with the interests of the wealthy.
The ongoing feud between Zahawi and Farage dates back to past clashes over discriminatory policies and accusations of racism. Despite their history of conflicts, Zahawi’s decision to join Reform was met with mixed reactions from political figures and commentators.
Zahawi’s tenure as Chancellor in 2022 under Boris Johnson’s government was short-lived. His association with Reform and his past controversies have drawn scrutiny from various political circles, with opinions divided on his motives and political allegiances.
