A man has been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison for coercing a woman into engaging in sexual activities with multiple men over a period of three decades. The court heard that the actual number of men involved could be as high as a thousand during the 30-year span.

Rodney Johnston, 67, from Starston in Norfolk, was found guilty after the court was informed that he had threatened the woman into participating in various sexual acts with men in secluded countryside locations, hotels, and vehicles. These encounters, which often included up to 15 men and lasted for hours, were documented through photographs and videos by Johnston.

During sentencing at Norwich Crown Court, Judge Alice Robinson highlighted the victim’s profound impact, describing the abuse as severe and lifelong. The court learned that Johnston had amassed over 30,000 images and videos of the abuse, coercing the woman to engage in sexual encounters with men up to five nights a week.

Johnston, who was convicted of multiple offenses spanning from 1994 to 2024, including procuring sexual intercourse by threats, causing sexual activity without consent, and intimidation of a witness, denied all charges during the six-week trial. However, police presented evidence supporting the woman’s claims of coercion.

The court was informed that Johnston used bulk text messages to arrange sexual encounters with men through adult social networks. While he claimed these messages were meant as jokes or fantasies, the police revealed thousands of other messages supporting the victim’s version of events, including communications detailing the abuse.

Following Johnston’s sentencing, the victim expressed her ordeal, stating that she had endured unimaginable suffering at the hands of a monstrous individual who treated her as an object. She described feeling dirty, sick, and terrified, but expressed relief at finally being free after decades of abuse.

The victim’s family commended her courage, while the senior investigating officer praised her bravery and encouraged other abuse victims to come forward. The police have initiated further investigations to identify and prosecute other individuals involved in the abuse, emphasizing their commitment to seeking justice for the victims.
