In Gaza City, amidst the ruins of Israeli airstrikes, more than 100 stretchers adorned with Palestinian flags marked the solemn site where the Abu Sharia and Hasayna families’ remains were finally laid to rest. These families, part of the same clan, lost 112 members in the November 23, 2023, attack.
After nearly three years, the families, alongside Gaza’s Civil Defence, gathered to bury their loved ones, whose remains were reduced to bones, teeth, and shreds of clothing. The funeral held at a Baptist cemetery was a moment of both relief and sorrow for the surviving members.
Youssef Abu Sharia, who lost several family members in the strike, shared the challenges they faced in locating the remains due to the scarcity of heavy machinery caused by Israeli restrictions and damages from previous strikes. The families’ painstaking search involved digging through rubble by hand.
The long-awaited burial ceremony saw a prayer at the strike site, followed by a procession to the cemetery where flower petals were scattered. While mourning the deceased, the families also expressed frustration over the thousands still missing in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for international assistance in accessing heavy machinery to aid in the recovery efforts.
