Iran’s new leader of the Supreme National Security Council recently announced plans to establish an “exclusion zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz to target vessels attempting to pass through the waterway. Mohsen Rezaei revealed this information on Iran’s state broadcaster, indicating that ships identified in this zone with intentions to transit the Strait of Hormuz would face sanctions.

The specifics of this exclusion zone are yet to be fully disclosed, following the recent U.S. military actions against three Iranian oil tankers in response to Tehran’s ballistic missile strikes on U.S. warships. Experts view these events as a concerning escalation, particularly after Iran’s previous assaults on commercial ships at sea.

Rezaei mentioned that the exclusion zone’s boundaries would start from the U.S. naval blockade line, extend towards the Strait of Hormuz, and continue into the Persian Gulf. This move is part of Iran’s response to the U.S. blockade aimed at Iranian ports to restrict oil shipments. The U.S. military reported deploying over 20 warships to enforce the blockade, redirecting commercial vessels and rendering some disabled.

With negotiations stalled, the U.S. has intensified efforts to pressure Iran economically. In parallel, Iran has continued its attacks in the region, including an alleged strike on a U.S. vessel entering the Strait of Hormuz, a claim dismissed by the U.S. military as false.

Recent hostilities have reignited between the U.S. and Iran, with both sides resorting to military actions and economic strategies to gain leverage. Amidst the ongoing conflict, Iran’s ability to navigate sanctions and maintain oil trade remains a focal point, as does the unresolved issue of its nuclear program.

In the midst of these tensions, diplomatic relations have strained, and both countries are striving to assert their positions in the region. The significance of the Strait of Hormuz in global energy trade underscores the complexities of the situation, as international concerns grow over the stability of the region.
