California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that internal pressure within the Republican Party will compel President Donald Trump to return to the bargaining table with Canada. In an interview with CBC News’ chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton, Newsom highlighted the mounting criticism Trump is facing from his own party.
With the upcoming U.S. midterm elections posing a significant test for Trump’s administration, Newsom suggested that the current Republican majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives could be at risk. Trade discussions between the U.S. and Canada recently collapsed, leading Prime Minister Mark Carney to suspend talks. Shortly after, Trump imposed new tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Newsom expressed confidence that Trump cannot afford to prolong the break in negotiations. He anticipated Trump’s return to the table within a matter of days to a few weeks. California’s stance was made clear by Newsom, emphasizing disapproval of Trump’s treatment of Canada.
The ongoing trade dispute has impacted California, particularly its wine industry, which has suffered from a year-long absence of its products on many Canadian shelves. California wine exports to Canada decreased by $343 million US between 2024 and 2025. When asked about potential animosity from California wine producers towards Canada, Newsom acknowledged its existence, attributing the situation to Trump’s actions.
Despite the challenges faced by the wine industry, Newsom acknowledged the complexities of restoring wine sales, especially after a failed deal that aimed to lift the ban. He commended Carney’s assertive approach towards Trump, noting that strength and conviction are crucial in dealing with the president.
Newsom, who is not seeking re-election as California’s governor, is rumored to be a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election. When questioned about his motivations against Trump’s tariffs, Newsom denied any political posturing, stating that his actions are not driven by future electoral prospects. However, he did not rule out the possibility of running for higher office in the future.
