The latest NHS data for England reveals a significant drop in the waiting list, marking the largest decrease in 15 years outside of the pandemic. In November, the backlog of operations and appointments decreased by 86,000, bringing the waiting list down to 7.31 million. This improvement signals a remarkable transformation in the NHS under the Labour government, following years of increasing wait times during previous Tory administrations.

Despite this progress, calls from unions and advocacy groups urge the Government to accelerate efforts in reducing NHS waiting times by allocating more resources to the struggling health service. Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the tangible impact of the government’s actions, highlighting a reduction of over 312,000 patients on the waiting list and an increase in timely treatments within 18 weeks.

The NHS elective waiting list in England had been steadily rising for more than a decade until Labour took office in July 2024, ending a 14-year Conservative rule. Streeting highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing NHS services through increased investments, modernization, and the dedication of NHS staff.

While the waiting list saw a significant decline in November, challenges persist in A&E departments, with a record number of over 12-hour trolley waits reported. The Royal College of Nursing warned of ongoing crises in emergency wards, underscoring the need for urgent action to address capacity and staffing issues in hospitals.

The demand for improved conditions in A&E continues, as the number of patients experiencing corridor care and extended wait times remains a pressing concern. The government aims to enhance A&E performance, setting a target for a higher percentage of patients to receive timely care within four hours.

Despite the progress made, Winter pressures persist, prompting the government to pledge ongoing support for NHS staff to ensure patients receive timely and quality care.
