U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce scheduled joint military drills with South Korea, citing the lack of support in denuclearizing Iran and emphasizing his positive rapport with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump took to social media to express his concern about the exercises set to commence, labeling them as costly and sending an inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korea. He stated that North Korea has been non-threatening and respectful during his presidency.

Acknowledging that it was too late to cancel the exercises, Trump instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to significantly decrease the joint military activities. He mentioned that he had proposed to South Korea’s president to collaborate on efforts to denuclearize Iran, but the offer was declined.

This is not the first instance of Trump attempting to halt these exercises, as he had previously labeled them as provocative during his initial term. South Korea’s Defense Ministry confirmed that the drills started as planned on Monday. The presidential Blue House in South Korea stated that they were reviewing Trump’s message and hoped that the amicable relationship between the U.S. and North Korean leaders would foster meaningful dialogue for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

In response to Trump’s claim that President Lee Jae Myung had rejected joining U.S. efforts in denuclearizing Iran, Seoul mentioned ongoing discussions regarding potential military contributions while considering defense readiness on the Korean Peninsula and domestic legal processes. Trump’s decision has drawn criticism from Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, who deemed the move as shortsighted and mistaken.

The joint training, involving 18,000 South Korean troops over 11 days, aimed to enhance readiness against threats from North Korea. The U.S. military emphasized the exercises as crucial for regional peace and security, reinforcing the commitment between the U.S. and South Korea to defend their territories. The drills were expected to involve joint operations in various scenarios, including live-fire exercises, precision targeting, and military equipment distribution.

North Korea has recently resumed ballistic missile testing activities in violation of UN regulations. The country threatened stern measures against the U.S. and South Korea, labeling the drills as preparations for an aggressive war. Experts suggest that North Korea often uses such military exercises as a pretext to escalate testing activities and rally public support for its leader.

Trump’s move follows his previous engagements with Kim Jong-un to address North Korea’s nuclear program. Since taking office, Trump has expressed interest in continuing discussions with North Korea. The announcement to scale back military exercises came after Trump posted a photo with Kim, highlighting their positive relationship despite any perceived tensions.
