Denmark’s foreign minister has stated that Donald Trump is persistent in his ambition to acquire Greenland, despite a recent high-level meeting failing to resolve US demands for ownership of the territory. The meeting involved Denmark’s Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Greenland’s Vivian Motzfeldt, and US officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Tensions over the control of Greenland, which the US deems crucial for national security, have escalated as European allies plan a joint troop mission in support of Denmark. Rasmussen acknowledged the need for further discussions to find a mutually agreeable path forward, following unsuccessful talks with the Trump administration.
Trump is advocating for the acquisition of Greenland citing its strategic location, mineral resources, and increased military activities by Russia and China in the region. His warnings of a potential US invasion of Greenland have raised concerns among European nations, particularly in light of recent events in Venezuela.
Rasmussen emphasized that Trump’s desire to take over Greenland is clear, but Denmark firmly opposes such actions as they are not in the kingdom’s best interests. The UK and US have begun evacuating personnel from Middle East bases amidst concerns over potential conflict with Iran.
Amid fears of retaliation following Trump’s strong statements, air raid sirens were tested at the al-Udeid base in Qatar, used by British and American forces, with essential personnel moved to secure locations. The UK has temporarily closed its embassy in Iran and is operating remotely due to security concerns.
