A young woman involved in a fatal car accident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals while she was rushing to a beauty salon has avoided imprisonment. Laila Barnard-Wigley, 27, was driving her Mercedes when she caused a head-on collision due to driving too fast for the wet road conditions following heavy rain. The incident claimed the lives of Dean Yarrow, 33, and Faye Wardle, 32, on May 7, 2021, after Barnard-Wigley pleaded guilty to careless driving. The accident occurred near the Grindale crossroads in Bridlington on the A165.
Prosecutors revealed that Barnard-Wigley was in a hurry to reach a beauty salon before its closure at 3:30 pm to sell beauty products. She was reportedly overtaking vehicles to navigate through traffic swiftly when her car lost control, veered into an oncoming vehicle, and caused a fatal collision. The court heard that she failed to recognize the risks associated with driving in wet conditions, leading to the tragic outcome.
Despite the devastating consequences of the accident, Barnard-Wigley expressed remorse for her actions. Her lawyer acknowledged the tragedy of the situation and extended condolences to the victims’ families and friends. The court handed down a 21-month suspended prison sentence, 200 hours of unpaid work, a six-month curfew from 9 pm to 6 am, a five-year driving ban, and a requirement to pass an extended driving test as part of her sentencing.
Family members of the deceased victims shared their profound grief over the loss, highlighting the emotional turmoil and emptiness they have experienced since the tragic incident. The court recognized that while the sentence cannot bring back the lives lost, it serves as a reminder of the importance of driving responsibly and attentively in all conditions to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
