A private jet carrying eight individuals has crashed following departure from a bustling airport in the United States amid severe snow conditions.
The incident involving a Bombardier Challenger 600 occurred at around 7:45 pm at Maine’s Bangor International Airport. The status of the occupants remains unknown, with both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board launching investigations.
The crash coincided with a widespread winter storm affecting New England and various parts of the country. Emergency teams promptly responded at the airport, which was subsequently closed due to the single aircraft incident during takeoff.
Authorities at Bangor International Airport have urged individuals to avoid the area as investigations continue into the unfolding situation. Prior to departure, communication between the pilot and air traffic control highlighted poor visibility caused by adverse weather conditions. Shortly after receiving clearance for takeoff from runway 33, a controller announced a halt in all field traffic, with subsequent reports of the aircraft being upside down and carrying three crew members and potentially five passengers.
Located approximately 200 miles north of Boston, Bangor International Airport offers direct flights to cities such as Orlando, Washington DC, and Charlotte. Over the weekend, a powerful storm blanketed the eastern US with sleet, freezing rain, and snow, leading to significant disruptions in both air and ground transportation and widespread power outages across the Southeast.
The commercial aviation sector also experienced substantial disruptions nationwide, with over 12,000 flights canceled and nearly 20,000 delayed. Major airports in Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, North Carolina, New York, and New Jersey were among those severely impacted by the weather-related challenges.
The Bombardier Challenger 600, known for its spacious interior accommodating nine to 11 passengers, was introduced in 1980 as the first private jet featuring a “walk-about cabin.” It remains a popular choice for charter flights, offering luxurious travel experiences for its passengers.
