BBC co-commentator Steve Cram has urged Winter Olympic officials to address the issue of the Canada curling team’s use of inappropriate language. The Canadians dealt a significant blow to Team GB by defeating them 9-5.
Brad Jacobs’ team has been at the center of controversy for their behavior in Milan and Cortina. The BBC had to issue an apology after Canada’s Marc Kennedy engaged in a profanity-laden exchange with Swedish player Oskar Eriksson earlier in the competition.
Kennedy also faced allegations of rule violations during Canada’s victory over Sweden, leading World Curling to issue a statement clarifying the rules. Despite this, the BBC commentary team once again criticized the Canadians for their language.
During a break in Tuesday’s match, the Canadian team was overheard using foul language while TV cameras were nearby, prompting disapproval from Cram and co-commentator Logan Gray.
Following an incident where a Canadian team member was heard swearing after scoring a point, Cram expressed his irritation, emphasizing the need for officials to address the Canadians’ behavior. Gray remarked that they had “potty mouths.”
At that stage, Canada had secured a 3-1 lead after the third end, a crucial moment in the match. Team GB, led by Mouat, had a strong position with two scoring stones, but Jacobs’ team capitalized on the opportunity to score a point.
Despite not being captured on television or by microphones, Mouat’s team will likely be frustrated by the outcome. Having previously won a silver medal in the 2022 Games, Team GB faces a challenging path to the semi-finals after the loss to Canada.
Following a defeat against Norway in their last round-robin match, Team GB’s match against Canada carried even more significance. To secure a spot in the semi-finals, they needed victories against both Canada and the USA, their upcoming opponents.
Even a win against the Americans may not guarantee Team GB a semi-final spot. They will need favorable results in other matches to progress to the next stage.
