Two Canadian researchers have been honored in a worldwide image competition showcasing ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition recognized 11 photos from researchers around the globe at different career stages. These images feature animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural scenes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, secured the category titled “protecting our planet” with his image named “A bridge between past and present.”

For researchers, capturing images is a means of documenting their work and providing a glimpse into the world of science. Brennan emphasized the role of images in establishing public trust in environmental education and ecological research.

Brennan’s winning photo, “Intertidal education,” was taken while overseeing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B. The image captures the students studying fish species at night under a full moon, showcasing their curiosity. The challenging environment of the Bay of Fundy, known for its extreme tides, added complexity to the photography process.

Tian’s winning image, “A bridge between past and present,” combines 33 drone photos of the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, illustrating the impact of human activities on ecosystems. Tian highlighted the importance of showcasing environmental research through photography to foster natural empathy and awareness.

Other notable winners from the BMC image competition include Sritam Kumar Sethy, Ryan Wagner, Victor Huertas, and Alwin Hardenbol, who captured diverse aspects of ecological research and conservation efforts through their compelling images. These photographs serve as powerful tools for engaging the public and highlighting the significance of ecological studies and findings.
