Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has reported that one of the 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents who went missing following the devastating floods in Nepal’s border area with China has been located safe and sound. The individual had been unreachable due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.
The flash floods occurred a week ago when a glacier collapsed in the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China. The catastrophe resulted in over 1,100 fatalities and left more than 3,900 people missing. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has indicated that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are still unaccounted for.
In response to the crisis, Canada is set to dispatch over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region. This effort is in addition to the $5 million in humanitarian aid that Ottawa had previously committed.
