“Concern Grows as Candidates Scarce in Eastern Ontario Elections”

James Brose, the mayor of North Algona Wilberforce in eastern Ontario, is concerned about the lack of candidates stepping up to run for the upcoming fall election. Brose, who has been in office for eight years, decided not to seek re-election due in part to a health scare last year. Despite the deadline for nomination papers being August 21, no one in his township has yet expressed interest in succeeding him as mayor.

Brose acknowledged that the role of mayor entails a significant workload and challenges with managing social media interactions. His personal circumstances, including having a son in British Columbia and the demanding nature of the job not allowing for extended vacations, also factored into his decision to step back.

The issue of a limited number of candidates running for municipal offices is not unique to North Algona Wilberforce. Several other municipalities in eastern Ontario, such as Carleton Place, Petawawa, and Beckwith, are facing similar situations with only the incumbent filing for mayoral or reeve positions.

In Ottawa, several incumbent councillors are running unopposed, highlighting a trend of potential acclamations in the upcoming election. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario emphasized the importance of competitive elections for a healthy democracy.

Despite the challenges, incumbent Coun. Dan Lynch in Arnprior remains optimistic that more candidates will file their nomination papers before the deadline. Lynch, who has had previous successes in council bids, believes in the satisfaction of the community with his performance.

Both Brose and Lynch acknowledged the financial constraints of serving in municipal politics, with the meager remuneration being a barrier for younger, working-age residents to participate. The demands of the role, coupled with the modest compensation, make it a challenging endeavor for individuals balancing work and family commitments.
