Just before Canada prepares to impose counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods, negotiations between the two countries remain inactive with no plans for last-minute discussions. The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office confirmed there are no scheduled calls between Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, and Canadian trade negotiators are not expected to return to the negotiating table before the 12:01 a.m. ET Tuesday deadline.

The impending counter-tariffs are targeted at over 700 American products, with tariff rates ranging from 15 to 50 percent. These tariffs are a response to the 50 percent tariffs imposed by Trump on Canadian goods following the breakdown of trade talks last month.

Industries heavily impacted by U.S. tariffs, such as steel, dairy, and wood products, will face the highest counter-tariffs. In an exclusive interview, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer cautioned against further retaliation from Canada, hinting at potential bans on Canadian products.

Former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed support for Canada’s counter-tariffs and suggested that additional measures, including imposing export taxes, might be necessary. Meanwhile, the Conservative party has urged the government to be transparent about the effects of retaliatory tariffs on families and businesses, emphasizing the importance of clarity and a cohesive plan.

While blame for the breakdown of talks has been exchanged between the U.S. and Canada, the future of negotiations appears to hinge on Canada’s willingness to engage. Carney has signaled openness to return to the negotiating table if the U.S. shows sincerity in finalizing a trade deal, amid ongoing criticisms and threats from Trump.

As tensions escalate, Trump continues to criticize Canada, targeting specific industries and trade practices. The situation remains fluid as both countries navigate the complexities of trade disputes and retaliatory measures.
