Prime Minister Mark Carney has cautioned Canadians about the consequences of shifting away from the United States but emphasizes that the alternative would be more detrimental. In a video released following Canada’s imposition of retaliatory tariffs, Carney reaffirmed the country’s strategy to counter the U.S. trade war by forging new trade agreements with other nations to reduce dependency on the U.S.

Carney stated, “We have all the necessary resources to pivot and thrive. While there will be a cost to this pivot, taking action is far less costly than maintaining the status quo.” This video is part of a series initiated by Carney last spring to inform Canadians about government policies and responses to U.S. trade actions.

The Prime Minister highlighted the aim of these policies to enhance Canada’s resilience and ensure that no country can exert control over the nation’s trade activities or cultural values. Carney accused the U.S. of attempting to implement measures that would limit Canada’s trade flexibility with other nations and undermine the promotion and protection of the French language and culture.

Amid ongoing pressure, Federal Conservatives have urged Carney to disclose the full details of the deal Canada walked away from and have called for an earlier recall of Parliament. Poilievre emphasized the importance of transparency in negotiating with the U.S. president to maintain unity and a clear direction.

Carney’s video address also touched on the impact of Trump’s tariffs, which predominantly targeted specific Canadian industries, affecting workers in certain provinces more than others. Carney vowed to resist any attempts to weaken Canada’s sovereignty, emphasizing that previous protectionist actions by the U.S. had failed to subdue Canadian resilience.

The reciprocal tariffs imposed by Canada in response to the latest U.S. tariffs targeted various products, matching the export value affected by the U.S. tariffs. Carney stressed the necessity of these tariffs to safeguard Canadian interests and prevent unfair trade practices.

In a historical context, Carney referenced past tariff disputes with the U.S., highlighting Canada’s ability to adapt and thrive despite external pressures. He underlined the importance of diversifying trade partnerships to enhance economic stability and resilience.
