In 1986, the Nintendo Entertainment System introduced gamers to the iconic title, “Castlevania,” known for its monster-fighting action, challenging gameplay, and catchy soundtrack. Over the past four decades, the franchise has expanded with numerous sequels and spinoffs, but Konami, the Japanese publisher, had kept the series dormant since 2014.

The latest addition, “Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse,” aims to attract both new and longtime fans by drawing inspiration from various chapters of the series’ history and indie games it has influenced. The game successfully revives the series by blending classic 2D exploration with stunning artistic design, yet its high difficulty level might pose a challenge for newcomers to the genre.

The storyline of “Belmont’s Curse” follows Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, key characters from the 1989 game “Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse.” Set in 1499 Paris under monster attack, Rose embarks on a mission while dealing with a mysterious curse inherited from her mother, threatening to transform her into a monster.

The gameplay of “Belmont’s Curse” mirrors the format of the beloved 1997 title, “Symphony of the Night,” drawing inspiration from Nintendo’s Metroid and Zelda series. Players guide Rose through Paris and Dracula’s castle, navigating intricate locations and uncovering new abilities to progress through the interconnected map.

While the game offers a nostalgic “Metroidvania” experience, it poses significant challenges with faster and more powerful enemies, demanding players to utilize strategic thinking and reflexes to survive intense battles. Additionally, the game’s intricate level design and punishing trap rooms may frustrate players, requiring meticulous precision to progress.

Despite its challenging gameplay, “Belmont’s Curse” shines in its exceptional presentation and art direction, featuring vibrant color palettes and detailed environments that enhance the immersive experience. The game’s soundtrack adds to the ambiance with a blend of classical elements and modern beats, complementing the engaging gameplay.

However, it’s worth noting that the Nintendo Switch version of the game faced performance issues during the review period, including low-resolution visuals, extended load times, and input delay. While an update is expected to address these issues, players may consider alternative platforms for a smoother gaming experience.

Overall, “Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” presents a compelling blend of nostalgic gameplay, challenging mechanics, and captivating visuals, offering a fresh take on the beloved series while honoring its legacy.
