“Convicted Murderers in Hospitals Face Benefits Cut”

Convicted murderers detained in hospitals by court order may soon lose the right to claim benefits following public outrage over the case of Valdo Calocane in Nottingham. These criminals, already provided with accommodation, food, and healthcare, could currently receive over £800 monthly in Universal Credit.

Keir Starmer expressed concern, stating it’s unfair for serious offenders to receive unnecessary benefits at the taxpayer’s expense. While prisoners are prohibited from seeking state benefits, individuals under hospital orders for crimes like manslaughter and rape can still access Universal Credit.

The government plans to consult experts on excluding these individuals from benefit eligibility. The move comes after Valdo Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic who admitted to manslaughter, was found receiving £360 in welfare payments while detained for fatally stabbing three individuals.

Relatives of victims like Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Kennedi Westcarr-Sabaroche’s families have welcomed the reform, highlighting the injustice of offenders receiving benefits. The Prime Minister affirmed the proposed changes aim to ensure fairness and support for genuine needs.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) aims to differentiate between long-term hospital patients and those detained for serious crimes. The benefits system will be adjusted to reflect this distinction, protecting taxpayers and prioritizing victims’ families.

DWP Secretary Pat McFadden emphasized the importance of correcting the system to support those truly in need, not rewarding criminal behavior. Advocates like Julian Hendy from the Hundred Families charity argue that providing benefits to violent offenders is unjust and undermines the victims’ struggle for support.

The government’s initiative seeks to address these concerns and promote fairness and accountability in public policy.
