Lindsey Vonn has issued a heartfelt statement announcing her discharge from the hospital after a serious leg injury suffered during the Winter Olympics. Vonn was airlifted to a medical facility while competing in the downhill event at the Games in Italy. Following multiple surgeries, the skiing icon was initially released from the Italian hospital to return to the United States for further medical care. In an emotional Instagram post, Vonn disclosed the extent of her injuries, which included compartment syndrome and a fractured ankle, and expressed gratitude towards her surgeon for saving her leg from amputation.
Describing her injuries in a video on Instagram, Vonn explained the complexities of her tibia and fibula fractures, attributing the severity to compartment syndrome, a condition where excessive blood accumulation causes tissue damage.
Vonn credited Dr. Tom Hackett for performing a fasciotomy that prevented the need for amputation, acknowledging the pivotal role he played in her recovery. Despite an extended hospital stay due to complications like low hemoglobin levels necessitating a blood transfusion, Vonn expressed relief at being discharged and detailed her current immobility, being confined to a wheelchair due to a broken ankle.
Looking ahead, Vonn outlined her rehabilitation plan, anticipating a gradual transition from a wheelchair to crutches over the coming weeks. She estimated a year-long recovery period for bone healing, with potential future surgery to address remaining issues like removing metal implants and repairing her ACL.
In a message accompanying her video, Vonn shared her gratitude for the support received and expressed determination to overcome the challenges ahead, emphasizing her focus on rehabilitation and eventual return to full health.
